New Research Shows a Link Between Poor Ventilation & Disease

Recently published research by The National Institute for Health and Welfare suggests that poor indoor ventilation could be responsible for a number of deaths in the UK.

The study found a link between indoor pollutants being primarily linked to cardiovascular disease, as well as many other health hazards such as asthma, lung cancer and respiratory diseases.

The National Institute for Health and Welfare has advised that a fundamental change to the way we ventilate our homes is essential in helping to reduce the risks of disease – and it could cut it by 38% each year. Many old houses do not have good ventilation in general but there are ventilation systems available for both old and new builds. Opening windows to allow fresh air is also key so that the air can circulate properly.

Of course, improved ventilation also applies to the workplace, where many businesses do not have suitable ventilation systems in place.

At Robinsons, we fully support this research and take the findings seriously. If poor ventilation really is responsible for a shorter life expectancy in the UK, then we should all try and do our best to make sure the air we breathe is as clean as possible, particularly in the workplace. It is a company’s responsibility to make sure that there is appropriate air ventilation throughout the building and this often starts with Heat Recovery Ventilation running alongside the air conditioning system. Each air con and heat recovery unit needs regular maintenance and servicing to ensure it is providing clean, unpolluted air throughout the building.
