The Bowes Museum, County Durham

Mechanical and electrical work in an operational Grade I listed museum.

The brief

Robinsons delivered plumbing, heating, ventilation and electrical services as part of improvements to the Bowes Museum while the museum remained open.

The wider improvement programme included new restaurant, education, exhibition, shop and reception spaces, as well as lifts. Robinsons’ recorded scope was the building services work described here.

What the work involved

Works took place while the museum remained operational. The archive records Grade I building requirements and careful work in a sensitive environment, with feature lighting to highlight the exhibits.

Planning a similar project?

In an occupied heritage building, agree access, working areas and protection of sensitive spaces before work starts. The brief should identify existing systems that need to be retained.
