A simple swipe or proximity card would be presented to a card reader located outside the door, when the card is read by the card reader the door will automatically unlock for a predetermined time. Access control systems include single door systems which will allow individual cards to be added and deleted individually.
The more complex card access systems will allow individual cards to be controlled by time zones so that each card can have access at different times in the day. When the system is linked to a PC it will allow an audit trial to determine when the card was used and at which door.
