Underfloor Heating – It’s All In The Design

As homeowners and commercial businesses look for more efficient heating solutions, underfloor heating is often a favourable choice.

With demand high, how easy is it to install? This comes down to property analysis and design, which needs scoping out in the early stages in order to achieve a sound end result.

Each property needs assessing accordingly to determine insulation levels and, in particular, heat loss. If heat loss is too high throughout the property, the underfloor heating will not be able to operate efficiently. Because each room in a building will be subject to varying degrees of heat loss, each one needs assessing individually for accurate calculations.

As an example, a room with large windows and a number of external walls will experience greater heat loss than one with a small double-glazed window and 1 external wall. Older properties also tend to be far less insulated so these can require more detailed analysis to determine the best solution.

Here are some advantages with underfloor heating:

  • Only a low water temperature is required, typically 35-45 degrees C
  • It can be adapted to most floor constructions
  • There is an even distribution of heat as the design enables the whole space to be used as a heating medium
  • There is an aesthetic benefit, meaning no space is taken up by radiators
  • It’s comfortable and totally silent

There are a number of factors which need considering as part of the underfloor heating plans too. The heat output of the floor construction, for example, needs to be identified. Add to that the floor coverings (where some conduct heat better than others) and flow rates / temperatures, and soon you start to build a picture of the detail involved with installing underfloor heating. Once everything has been assessed, the designer can then work on the heating pipework layout to provide the most efficient heating system available.
