How Clean Is Your Heating System?

Did you know that hard or poor quality water can result in increased wear and tear on your heating system?

At Robinsons, one of our popular services is a water treatment which helps eliminate contaminants and scale on the internal components of your heating system. This is important because it prolongs the life of your boiler as well as improving the overall heat efficiency.

Here are some key considerations when looking after your heating system:

Water softeners and filters

In some areas of the UK, the available water is harder than in other areas. This is water that contains dissolved compounds such as calcium and magnesium. In London, the water is considered to be much harder than Yorkshire and the South West. In this case, a water softener system can be used.

Filters work in a slightly different way. As heating professionals, we fit a wide range of system filters and the benefits are outlined at the point of installation. For example, a twin action system filter can capture magnetic and non-magnetic water contaminants which is useful for both hard and soft water areas because the filter keeps the system clean on the inside. It helps to protect the boiler and internal components. If you install a water treatment filter at the same time as your new boiler is installed, you’ll benefit from prolonged efficiency and cost savings. System filters can be fitted in older boilers but in some cases the damage has already been done so it’s worth upgrading everything at the same time.

Regular maintenance is key

Water treatments aren’t likely to be top of any businesses’ maintenance lists, but we can think of a few good reasons why it should be! Regular water treatments and general maintenance help to keep your heating system in tip top condition, reducing the need for call-outs and repairs. Not only that, the reduction in costly energy bills is an added bonus for any commercial business keen to operate more cost efficiently.

When a Robinsons engineer is tasked with a water treatment procedure, the first step is to survey the system. It’s a bit like a full health scan for your boiler, which helps us understand the boiler’s strengths and weaknesses in the first instance. This full examination will help to determine which radiators heat up first and which remain cold. There are also some out of sight components that need checking, such as cisterns. The general wear and tear of the system will help us to identify which water treatment is going to be right for the system to maximise the lifespan and efficiency levels.
